Thyroid problem news from Thyroid Talk
thyroid uptake scan test results
A thyroid scan uses a radioactive substance and a camera to measure how much of the substance
is absorbed in the bloodstream by the thyroid gland.
A thyroid scan is usually carried out to diagnose problems with the thyroid. It may be done to evaluate thyroid nodules, or in conjunction with a radioactive iodine uptake test to evaluate the thyroid function. So, this procedure is basically a means of evaluating thyroid function and to diagnose abnormalities.
During a thyroid scan, the camera takes pictures of the thyroid gland from different angles.
The scan itself can show the shape and size, as well as the position of the thyroid.

Reasons for scan
A thyroid scan may be ordered by a specialist/physician when the gland becomes very large, or if hard lumps can be felt. This will then be helpful in accessing whether any growth is caused by an increase in thyroid tissue
or by a nodule.
Another type of thyroid scan (a whole body scan), could be carried out if someone has suffered with
thyroid cancer and it has now been treated.
