How your thyroid gland works

Your thyroid gland is a small gland, normally weighing less than one ounce, located in the front of the neck. It is made up of two halves, called lobes, that lie along the windpipe or trachea and are joined together by a narrow band of thyroid tissue, known as the isthmus, just below your "Adams apple" or larynx. During development the thyroid gland originates in the back of the tongue, but it normally migrates to the front of the neck before birth. Sometimes it fails to migrate properly and is located high in the neck or even in the back of the tongue (lingual thyroid). At other times it may migrate too far and ends up in the chest (substernal thyroid).........

Several recent studies have focused on the role of herbal medicine, nutrition and dietary supplements for the treatment of hyperthyroid disorders. In this article I describe several supplements and herbs that have been found to offer benefits for hyperthyroidism, and I describe the latest list of environmental triggers thought to contribute to the development of autoimmune thyroid disease.

 

 

Evaluation of central motor conduction in hypothyroid and hyperthyroid patients.

Deficiency or excess of thyroid hormones is associated with central nervous system (CNS) disturbances. Although the CNS involvement either in hypothyroidism or in hyperthyroidism have previously been shown on the basis of visual, auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials studies, less is known about the function of central motor pathways in both disorders.

 

 

Subclinical Thyroid Disease

Subclinical thyroid dysfunction is defined as an abnormal serum thyroid-stimulating hormone level (reference range: 0.45 to 4.50 µU per mL) and free thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels within their reference ranges. The management of subclinical thyroid dysfunction is controversial. The prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism is about 4 to 8.5 percent, and may be as high as 20 percent in women older than 60 years.
