Hi there,
I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism one week ago and have seen my Endocrinologist who prescribed 5mgs of Methimazole 3 times a day...and, in addition, I am currently on Atenolol to slow my heart rate.

I am wondering if someone has any specific diet suggestions to help control my grave's disease through a healthy diet?? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would love to be able to control this completely through diet, if that's possible thanks! Nicole

Hi Nicole,

Hyperthyroidism patients should avoid shrimps, softshell crabs, soy, soya milk, iced water.
It is advisable also not to OVER-exercise as it might tense your hormones and metabolism. Hot yoga and sauna are not advisable too. Swimming is by far the best exercise for HYPER thyroidism.
Do NOT get angry easily too, control them. Thyroid glands disorder can trigger anger, depression which affects the liver. The "injured" liver in return affects the function of the eye and thyroid glands. Prevent this cycle by controlling your temper.  Hope it helps.Email me,i got lots more to share.Gd day

Hi,

I really think I need some advise. I just came home from my endocrinologist appointment. In my last posting here, I mentioned that he thought that I was having insulin resistance problems and a change in diet would be in order. When I visited him today, he indicated that my sugar was high (103) and my potassium was a little low. My thyroid numbers were very good. He did not think that my problem was insulin resistance but possible pre-diabetes. He told me to change my diet. When I got back from his office I called my Primary Care Physician who did not agree with my endocrinologist. He felt that my imbalance in sugar and pottasium was still due to an imbalance in my thyroid. I have an appointment with a new endocrinologist with a better hospital in a few days, however, my question is has anyone else had this problem (either insulin intolerance or high sugar and low pottasium) and what did they do to fix it. Thanks, I would appreciate some feedback because I am so nervous about the results of this afternoon's appointment.

I think you should eat a low sugar diet anyway. I am hypothyroid and have been tested for insulin resistance. I think its all related. Low carb diet is the way to go. It helps you lose weight quickly and because you may have insulin resistance it is the best way to lose weight. You might miss bread etc but who cares when you see the weight coming off and you start to feel better. We've been conditioned to miss all those white crappy foods that are just poison to our bodies. Also, if we have some kind of disorder like a thyroid condition its not going to help if we load our bodies up with junk food. Anyway, I'm no saint when it comes to food. I have been feeling really crappy that I turn to sugary foods for comfort. Slowly and surely I will beat this. At least my weight has stopped going up. Now the mission is to try and lose some weight.

Hi r.newman2.

Have you typed in diet or losing weight etc into the search box at the top of this page?
Try searching the message board and thyroidtalk as a lot of topic have come up on this forum about it, especially what foods people have read you could try eating or avoiding.

Oh, just as an after thought, I remembered something Trish posted a little while back, I know she wont mind if I paste it here. It was in a topic about losing weight and also feeling good.

"It really is as much mental as physical - isn't it? I never feel like doing much exercise, but 20 minutes per day speed walking has made a huge difference to the way I feel and behave! We all get down and we all find comfort in things we probably shouldn't eat or do. However, don't rule out all the crap! I have found that a good balance gives you a significantly happier life and overall sense of well being. I don't want to sound like a meditation and nutritional guru, but try it and see what you think after just 21 days. Here are my top 10 tips. I dare you to try it for 21 days and then tell me how you feel:

1. Do 15-20 minutes of moderate excercise per day
2. Drink 2 litres of fresh water per day (room temperature, if possible as it is absorbed into the body easier if it is slightly tepid)
3. Take a range of GOOD quality vitmins including C, B12, garlic, Flax seed.
4. Try a tonic from a reputable herbal remedist
5 Eat 5 portions of fruit and veg per day (ideally organic)
6. Stay off high carbs and starch foods
7. Watch out for too many preservatives
8. Do deep breathing exercises 10 times per day
9. Get out and about with hubby and enjoy each other
10. Take 6 sessions of SAFE sun bed treatments - the extra Vitamin D will make you feel better.

Well, it sounds like a lot, but you'll be surprised how easy this lot is..... and it helps in other areas too!
Good luck and all the best,
Trish"
