Thyroid mistakenly removed in mix-up

The Yomiuri Shimbun

(MARCH 2006) The thyroid gland of a 69-year-old woman was mistakenly removed at Saitama Medical School Hospital in February after her thyroid gland sample was confused with that of a different patient with thyroid cancer, the hospital said Wednesday.

The woman's thyroid gland was tested at the hospital on Dec. 6, because she suffered from a thyroid malfunction. Her sample was mistakenly labeled as that of a 70-year-old female thyroid cancer patient.

Without noticing the mistake, the hospital performed surgery on the 69-year-old woman on Feb. 27 to partially remove her left thyroid gland.

The hospital discovered the mix-up and apologized to the woman after it tested the removed gland and discovered it was not cancerous.
